Spirit Whispers

I hear the spirits at night
They crowd close to whisper
The things they know
Some cry desperately
Tearing at my skin
They want to suffocate me
With the wrongs of my past
But I can't help but feel
They are my friends
At least I am not alone
They are the loud ones
The ones that want to drag me
Into the sorrow that is their's
Sometimes I give myself to them
Then there are the quiet ones
Pressing so close to smother me
Quiet and curious
Constantly whispering of things
forgotten and undone
In all the noise my spirit says
'Be still.'
So I listen to them
Friends
And my spirit is quiet as we listen
Trying to hear what we have done
What we have not done
And what our punishment
And our reward will be
